MSUglobal – what we did in 2013
We did a lot of good work this past year at Michigan State University and I’m pleased to recap it here.
In 2013, MSUglobal launched a new strategy, based on Bolder by Design principles, to achieve Five Outcomes for Michigan State University and its faculty. Bolder By Design created the strategic context to develop our ‘Five Outcomes’ concept and our new location in the Nisbet Building has enabled the MSUglobal team the creative space necessary to deliver on that new strategy.
Here are some of the highlights of what we’ve accomplished so far with this new dynamic:
- Started the Innovation Fellows program. The founding fellows of 2013-2014 are John Spink, College of Veterinary Medicine; Jeff Grabill and Julie Lindquist, College of Arts & Letters; Cris Sullivan, College of Social Science; David Kramer and Greg Austic, College of Natural Science. Read more.
- Established a Faculty Entrepreneur in Residence. Dale Elshoff from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources is currently helping MSUglobal launch SpartanCorps, aimed at engaging MSU students, faculty, staff, alumni and others within the MSU community in solving grand global challenges. These programs have pilot phases launching in 2014.
- Leveraged MSU expertise through a new MSUglobal Advisory Board
- Increased events to foster knowledge and learning innovations:
- Igniting Innovation, our annual event, featured three panels: Experiential Education at MSU; an introduction to SpartanCorps; and MSUglobal’s impact on faculty projects.
- The Open Knowledge Convening, co-sponsored by the Gates Foundation, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, College of Veterinary Medicine and College of International Studies and programs
- Fanning the Flames featuring: David Kramer and Greg Austic discussing citizen science and open source technology; an introduction to SpartanCorps; a discussion of MSU’s pilot MOOCs; a presentation of the impact of LiteracyCorps Michigan; and an overview of the FoodPLUS|Detroit initiative.
- Innovation Space Featured Artists featuring Karl Gude, Toby Ten Eyk and Mark Sullivan
We also continued to facilitate major projects, including:
- Creating an open knowledge toolkit and training translational scholars with the Gates-funded AgShare II with the College of Veterinary Medicine;
- Developing the core knowledge platform for the USAID HESN Global Center for Food Systems Innovation with International Studies and Programs;
- Facilitating the knowledge and learning systems for Food Plus Detroit and Global Innoversity with the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources;
- Producing 20 eLearning modules for the World Bank’s Gender in Agriculture Sourcebook.
- Piloting MOOCs with the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Arts and Letters.
In 2014-15, we are planning to:
- Incubate four new focus areas with MSUglobal Innovation Fellows.
- Increase by 20 percent the number of faculty working with us to incorporate revenue-generating and reputation-strengthening delivery formats.
- Increase by 30 percent the number of research projects working with us to incorporate knowledge platforms.
